Disavowals / Cahun, Claude ; Susan de Muth, translator ; Agnes Lhermitte, translator ; MacOrlan P., 2008

Identifier: CC-49124-70164
Scope and Contents Claude Cahun (1894-1954), born Lucy Schwob, was a French poet, artist, photographer, writer, performance artist, and "queer freak," who explored the ambivalence of gender and sexual identity in her work. During the 1920s, she lived in Paris with her life-long partner and stepsister Suzanne Malherbe aka Marcel Moore ("the other me"). Together they collaborated on written works, sculptures, photomontages, and collages. Cahun is known for confronting the public's perception of sexuality, gender, beauty, and logic both in her Surrealist work and in her lifestyle. Cahun was known for her public appearances disguised as a sailor, gypsy, vampire, Buddha, or angel. Her collected writings were published in 2002 as Claude Cahun - Ecrits (edited by Francois Leperlier). In May, 1930, Editions Carrefour of Paris first published a book called Aveux non avenus, in which Cahun explored her subversive aesthetics in book form. Disavowals: or Cancelled Confessions is significant in that it is the...

Dream Machine / Gysin, Brion ; Laura Hoptman, curator ; Burroughs WS ; P-orridge G ; Giorno J., 2010

 Item
Identifier: CC-56811-10000179
Scope and Contents The Sackners attended this spectacular exhibition. Water Row Books: This is the first comprehensive survey of the works of the radical artist Brion Gysin, featuring a stunning selection of illustrations. During his lifetime Brion Gysin (1916-1986) inspired an array of artists, writers, poets and musicians, notably the Beat Generation. Since his death Gysin's own work has only increased in popularity, yet his radical approach to art defies categorization. Brion Gysin: Dream Machine is the first detailed study of Gysin's oeuvre in both art-historical and contemporary contexts. A devotee of invention, Gysin created paintings, drawings, photo-collages, installations, poetry and sound experiments. He produced the cut-up collage novel The Third Mind (1965) with William Burroughs, and with Ian Sommerville developed the Dreamachine (1961), a kinetic sculpture designed to induce visions by playing flickering light on the closed eyes of the viewer. This exciting new book, featuring incisive...

Drop out! / Farquharson, Robin., 1971

 Item
Identifier: CC-48326-69351
Scope and Contents This book is stored in a box with Houedard material owing to dsh's indebtedness to Farquarson for the slash-dash typewriter font although there is no mention of it in thos book. This book is an autobiographic episode in the life of Robin Farquharson who ditched a successful university career and simply dropped out, living on the streets of London, and his acquaintance with L.S.D. The content has similarities with Situationism. Robin Farquharson was a very brilliant young man who had become interested in the theory of voting while he was still an undergraduate. This theory was published with Michael Dummett. Robin Farquharson fell victim to this awful mental illness (manic-depressive) and couldn't really do any more creative work. . There was a dramatic episode when he entered the prize fellowship examination at All Souls. He quite certainly would have been elected but for the insane telephone conversation he had with the Warden on the eve of the election meeting -- the first...

Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Regan / Morris, Edmund., 1999

 Item
Identifier: CC-33473-35117
Scope and Contents This is a first edition. Morris was selected as the official biographer of President Reagan in 1984 and had access to the president, the White House and archival material. The literary techique he utilized in writing this book can be classsified as postmodernist non-fiction because Morris' "biographical mind" became another character in telling Reagan's life story. Further, the varied typography in this book also is a postmodernist trait. The Barnes & Noble Review commented as follows. Ronald Reagan has long inspired heated opinions: His defenders think him among the greatest of presidents (Could there really have been "” and not so long ago "” a movement to add his image to Mount Rushmore?), and his detractors rate him among the worst. He was a man who relied on a sort of national nostalgia; he often spoke of how things once were (or, perhaps more accurately, how he would have had us believe they once were), evoking a simpler, more innocent time that never really existed....
